Arizona Downs ASU, 3-2

TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats (12-4) improved to 9-0 at home with a 3-2 rivalry win over the Arizona State Sun Devils (12-5) on Tuesday night at Hi Corbett Field.

On what amounted to a bullpen day, the Wildcats pitching staff was lights out. Starting pitcher Raul Garayzar worked three scoreless, one-hit inning while striking out two but did not factor into the decision.

Right-hander Carson Johnson (0.2) and southpaw Eric Orloff followed out of the pen and issued scoreless efforts. Righty Julian Tonghini (1-0) earned his first win after 1.2 scoreless innings.

Tony Pluta worked a three-batter ninth inning to hold a one-run lead and earn his third save of the season. He struck out the first batter he faced, allowed a one-out single, and induced a game-ending double play to seal the victory.

The Wildcats opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning; Brendan Summerhill and Aaron Walton led off the game with a pair of doubles and a bases-loaded walk from Easton Breyfogle gave the Cats an early 2-0 lead.

Arizona added to their lead with an RBI double from Tommy Splaine in the sixth inning, driving in TJ Adams for what would be the decisive run.
