ARLINGTON, Texas — The Arizona Wildcats (37-18) used a complete team effort to defeat the BYU Cougars (28-27) on a final score of 4-1 at the Big 12 Championship on Thursday morning.
Arizona now advances to the semifinal round of the Big 12 Championship and will face the winner of the [1] West Virginia vs. [8] Cincinnati quarterfinal.
The Wildcats offense jumped out to an early lead, with shortstop
Mason White and catcher
Adonys Guzman banging back-to-back home runs off opposite foul poles in the bottom of the first inning.
The Cats tacked on a run in fifth on an RBI single from third baseman
Maddox Mihalakis and picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double from pinch hitter
Dom Rodriguez.
Starting pitcher
Owen Kramkowski worked a gem for Arizona, tossing six scoreless innings while tying his career high with eight strikeouts. He earned the win to improve to 8-5 on the year.
Reliever
Tony Pluta worked the final two frames and earned a six-out save, his 12th of the season.
