Arizona sweeps BYU; Men’s Swimming Squad Takes First in Every Event

TUCSON, ARIZ. - Arizona Swim & Dive swept the BYU Cougars in the Cats' final home meet of the calendar year with dominant performances from all ends of the squad and 35 total first-place finishes.

The Wildcat men took down the Cougars 240-107 , while the women emerged victorious with a score of 217-131. The men's swimming squad completed a dominant sweep of the meet, earning first place in every event.

The Cats started the meet strong on Friday, Dec. 20, earning the top three spots in the Women's 400 Medley Relay, the first event of the meet, and the top two spots in the Men's 400 Medley Relay.

The Cats closed out the meet on the same powerful note they started it, finishing Saturday's competition with another relay sweep in the 400 Free Relay for both the men and women.

The competition was highlighted by notable performances from athletes across the squad, including Paige Armstrong, Kayman Neal, Mason Nyboer and Ralph Daleiden

Neal, a freshman, earned two individual first place finishes for the Cats, winning the 200 Back (1:56.18) and the 200 Free (1:49.36). Neal's finish in the 200 Back also earned her an NCAA "B" Cut.

Armstrong took home first place in both the 100 Back (53.68) and the 200 IM (2:02.12). In addition to her individual wins, Armstrong was a member of Arizona's first-place Women's 400 Medley and Women's 200 Medley Relays.

Nyboer showcased dominance in the distance races, securing top times in the 1650 Free (15:20.73) and 500 Free (4:25.23). Nyboer's 1650 Free time secured him an NCAA "B" Cut.

Daleiden continued what has already been a strong season for the Olympian, taking first in the Men's 100 and 200 Freestyle events and contributing as a member of first-place 400 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay teams. Daleiden already holds NCAA "B" Cut times in the 200 Free (1:32.17), which he secured at the Wolfpack GAC Invite in November.

Arizona's diving squad put up an impressive performance against the Cougars. On Friday, freshman Maria Colombo took first place in the Women's 3m event (277.96) and junior Gage DuBois took first place in the Men's 3m event (373.43). Colin Agor closely followed DuBois, putting up a 336.45 to take the second place spot.

DuBois swept the diving competition against the Cougars, finishing first in the Men's Platform event on Saturday with a score 381.83, more than 80 points above the closest competitor from BYU, who finished third. Arizona's Theo Hrach finished second in the Men's Platform and nabbed a Diving Zones cut with a 328.05 final score. Zara Ayazi also secured a Zones cut with her second-place finish (2:33.03) in the Platform event.
