TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 24 Arizona improved to 25-15 with two run-rule victories over UTEP on Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore
Allie Skaggs etched her name into the Arizona record books when she hit three home runs in the second game of the day, tying a program record for home runs in a single game.
Game 1 – Arizona 9, UTEP 0
The Cats beat UTEP 9-0 in the first game of the day on 10 hits with nine RBI.
Paige Dimler hit her sixth home run of the season in the run-rule win.
Four Wildcats had two hits each, with
Jasmine Perezchica and
Sharlize Palacios going 2-for-2 and
Blaise Biringer and
Paige Dimler going 2-for-3. Palacios led the team with three RBI.
Arizona scored four runs in the second inning to take an early lead over the Miners. The Wildcats strung together a trio of RBI singles and an RBI walk to take the 4-0 lead.
The Cats then scored four more in the third. Dimler started the inning with her solo home run. Palacios hit a two-RBI single and Skaggs followed with an RBI single to extend Arizona's lead to eight runs.
Sophia Carroll hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to give Arizona the 9-0 lead.
Hanah Bowen (9-7) picked up the win for the Cats. Bowen struck out six Miners through 4.0 innings.
Devyn Netz pitched in relief in the fifth inning and fanned two batters to secure Arizona's first win of the day.
Game 2 – Arizona 10, UTEP 2
The Cats completed the sweep of the Miners with a 10-2 mercy rule win to close out the doubleheader.
Arizona scored 10 runs on nine hits – six of which were home runs. The six homers were spread across four Wildcats. Skaggs went 3-for-4 – all home runs – and four RBI to tie Arizona's record for home runs in a single game. Palacios, Carroll, and
Hannah Martinez also homered in the win.
Palacios and Skaggs hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning to put the Cats up 3-0 to start.
UTEP had an RBI single in the third that Skaggs answered with her second home run in as many at-bats. The Miners added another run on a sac-fly in the fourth, but Martinez extended Arizona's lead with a two-RBI home run in the bottom the fourth.
Carroll hit her third home run of the season – a two-RBI shot – in the fifth and Skaggs hit her third homer of the game in the sixth to walk-off the run-rule victory over UTEP.
Devyn Netz earned the win in the second game to improve to 11-5. Netz struck out five batters in five innings and
Madi Elish entered in the sixth to close out the game.
