TUCSON, Ariz. - Following a masterful performance on Saturday against Kansas State in which he allowed just one hit and struck out a career-high 15 batters over 6.0 innings of work, Arizona right-hander Smith Bailey has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career.
Bailey's outing etched his name into the program record books, as he became the first Arizona pitcher in over 15 years to record 15 strikeouts in a game. He also finished one strikeout shy of matching the program record for strikeouts in a conference game.
The sophomore struck out 15 of the 21 batters he faced, including a stretch of seven consecutive punchouts during the game. He surrendered just one hit and one walk in what was nothing short of a sensational performance on the mound.
Bailey and the Wildcats will turn their attention to BYU, as they are scheduled to face the Cougars in a three-game series at Hi Corbett Field, beginning on Thursday, April 23 at 6:00 p.m. (MST).
