EUGENE, Ore. — Arizona junior Emma Gates delivered a career-best performance at the 2025 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships, finishing third in the women's high jump at historic Hayward Field.
Gates cleared a personal-best 1.91 meters (6-3¼) to earn a podium finish in front of a hometown crowd. The Stayton, Ore., native reached the top three against a field featuring Olympians and national champions.
"Competing at the 2025 USATF nationals was an amazing experience! I had a fun outdoor season this year with lots of PRs, so I felt great going into the meet," Gates said. "I knew there would be lots of competition but I ended up tying my PR of 1.91 and taking third! Super happy with my performance!"
The third-place finish adds another honor to a decorated career that already includes 2025 First Team All-America (Indoor High Jump) and the 2024 Pac-12 Outdoor High Jump Championship.
"I am so proud of Emma," said Arizona high jump coach Bob Myers. "She's overcome some challenges in recent weeks and showed incredible competitive spirit today. She willed her way over some high bars and beat some very good professional high jumpers."
With her podium finish, Gates is in position for potential Team USA selection for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September, pending final qualifying standards and rankings.
