TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 15 Arizona won both games of the doubleheader against South Alabama on the opening day of the Bear Down Fiesta.
Miranda Stoddard led the Wildcats to the pair of wins with four home runs, a triple, and drove in seven runs.
Brooke Mannon and
Aissa Silva combined for the 97th no-hitter in program history in the second game against the Jaguars.
Game 1 | #15 Arizona 7, South Alabama 6
The Cats won the first game, 7-6. Arizona recorded 11 hits and Stoddard had three of them – two of which were home runs.
Arizona plated two in the second on a two-run home run from Stoddard. South Alabama answered with two runs in the top of the third on a pair of sacrifice flies.
Sydney Stewart gave the Cats a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the third with a two-run double. Stoddard hit her second home run of the game – a solo shot – to give Arizona a three-run lead in the fourth.
The Jaguars tied the game in the fifth inning on a three-run home run. In the bottom of the fifth,
Paige Dimler drove in the sixth run for the Cats with an RBI single. South Alabama tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh with an RBI double.
Stewart scored the winning run in the seventh on a walkoff sac-fly from Dimler.
Devyn Netz picked up the win to improve to 3-1. She pitched the final two innings and gave up two hits and one run. Stoddard started the game in the circle, going 4.1 innings and striking out four Jaguars before being relieved by
Ryan Maddox.
Game 2 | #15 Arizona 15, South Alabama 0 (5 inn.)
Arizona run-ruled the second game of the doubleheader against South Alabama, 15-0, in five innings. The Cats hit four home runs and scored five runs in each of the first three innings.
Mannon and Silva struck out six batters en route to the combined no-hitter.
In the first inning, Dimler drove in the first three runs on a triple. Stoddard then hit a two-run home run – her third of the day – to give Arizona a 5-0 lead.
Arizona took a 10-0 lead after the second inning with a pair of home runs – a solo shot from Dimler and a two-run homer from
Jenna Sniffen – and an RBI single from
Regan Shockey.
In the third, Stoddard hit a two-run homer – her fourth home run of the day – and Sniffen scored on a wild pitch. Altmeyer rounded out the scoring with a two-run double to give Arizona the 15-0 lead.
Aissa Silva earned her first win of the season and struck out four Jaguars in 3.0 innings. Mannon struck out two batters in the the first two innings.
