TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats improved to 13-9 (7-5 Big 12) after taking down the No. 21 BYU Cougars in four sets (26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 26-24) on Wednesday night. This is the second straight ranked win for the Wildcats.
Arizona totaled 12 blocks to hold BYU to a .168 hitting percentage. The Wildcats' defense was led by
Adrianna Bridges with six blocks and
Journey Tucker who had five blocks.
Renee Jones,
Avery Scoggins, and
Jordan Wilson added four blocks each. Offensively, Wilson led the Wildcats with 24 kills and
Carlie Cisneros followed with 10 kills.
The Wildcats won the first set, 26-24. Arizona's defense totaled seven blocks to hold BYU to a .098 hitting percentage in the opening set. Bridges, Jones, and Tucker had three blocks each. Wilson led the offense with eight kills and a .438 clip. Bridges added three kills and hit .750 while Cisneros had two kills for the Cats.
BYU won the second set, 25-21, to even the match. The Cougars had five blocks to hold the Cats to a .070 hitting percentage in the set. Arizona was able to tie the set at 16-16 but BYU used a late 5-0 run to create separation. Tucker and Wilson both recorded four kills but the Cougars' block limited the Wildcats' offense.
Arizona took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-21 win in the third set. After 11 tie scores, the Cats used a 3-0 run to take the lead over the Cougars to win the set. Arizona hit .394 and was led by Wilson with seven kills and a .429 clip. Cisneros tallied four kills and hit .300 while Jones added two kills on two swings. The Cats recorded two blocks to hold the Cougars to a .231 hitting percentage in the set.
The Cats won the match with a 26-24 win in the fourth set. Arizona went on a 6-0 run in the middle of the set and used multiple runs following to win the set. Wilson led the offense with five kills and Jones followed with four kills. Bridges had three kills while Cisneros tallied two kills to help Arizona. Cisneros and Wilson had two blocks each to help the defense hold BYU to a .113 hitting percentage in the set.
Arizona will welcome Texas Tech on Friday, November 7 at 11 a.m. to McKale Center for Field Trip Day.
