TUCSON, Ariz. – Top-seed UCLA proved too much for host Arizona and the Bruins clipped the Wildcats, 4-3, on the strength of three home runs in a Pac-12 Softball Tournament quarterfinal at Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
UA starter
Devyn Netz (16-16) threw a worthy five hitter but three of the safeties were home runs, two by All-American Maya Brady. Megan Faraimo (29-2), the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year, didn't sparkle to her usual standards, giving up seven hits, but she did what it took.
Arizona took a 1-0 lead with three consecutive two-out hits in the top of the second.
Blaise Biringer singled to left,
Izzy Pacho hit a blooper to shallow center that second baseman Anna Vines appeared to have a chance at, but she ran into the second base umpire and fell down, allowing Biringer to reach third.
UCLA subbed for Vines, who walked off the field on her own.
Kaiah Altmeyer, UA's freshman center fielder, then doubled to right center to plate Biringer. Faraimo got nine-hole hitter
Logan Cole to ground to third to retire the side.
UA made it 2-0 in the third.
Dakota Kennedy led off with a double in deep center and after a fly ball and a hit batter, Netz doubled to left center for the RBI, sending
Olivia DiNardo to third.
Allie Skaggs drew a walk to load the bases.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Netz walked UCLA's Megan Grant and Brady hit her 17th home run of the year to knot the score, 2-2.
Allie Skaggs' RBI single to center dropped in front of Meono to bring in pinch runner
Tayler Biehl in the top of the fifth and give UA a 3-2 edge.
With an out in the bottom of the frame, Grant hit one over the batter's eye in center to make it 3-3. Brady followed with her second of the game and 18th of the season to give the Bruins the final 4-3 lead.
