TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 17 Wildcats lost to Utah, 13-11, in the series finale on Sunday. Arizona held the lead until to sixth inning when Utah tied the game and eventually took the lead in the seventh to win.
Arizona (20-5, 3-3 Pac-12) scored 11 runs on 14 hits, led by
Jasmine Perezchica with three hits. Freshman
Dakota Kennedy hit a grand slam in the first inning and
Devyn Netz hit a two-run home run in the fourth.
Utah scored in the first on an RBI double and Kennedy hit her grand slam – her third home run of the season – in the bottom of the inning to give the Cats an early lead.
Arizona added three more in the bottom of the second on a trio of RBI singles from Perezchica,
Blaise Biringer, and
Allie Skaggs for a 7-1 lead. Utah answered with a four-run third on a two-RBI single and a two-RBI double.
In the fourth, the Cats scored four runs to extend their lead to 11-5. Skaggs hit her 10th double of the season to bring in two runs and Netz hit her ninth homer of the season – a two-RBI shot to left center.
The Utes scored five in the fifth to bring the game within one run on an RBI single, a two-RBI double, a wild pitch, and a throwing error by Arizona. In the top of the sixth, Utah tied the game on an RBI single.
In the seventh, Utah hit a two-run home run to make it 13-11 and give the Utes their first lead of the game. Arizona was retired in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
Arizona used its full bullpen in the game.
Brianna Hardy (0-1) picked up her first loss after giving up the winning run to Utah in the seventh.
Ali Blanchard started the game, giving up one run in 1.0 innings pitched. Netz moved from first base to the circle in the second before being relieved by
Aissa Silva in the top of the fifth. Silva pitched 1.0 inning and allowed two runs to score.
Sydney Somerndike entered at the beginning of the sixth, facing four batters and allowing one run before Hardy relieved her. Hardy faced four batters, three in the sixth and one in the seventh, and Netz re-entered the circle in the seventh to close the game.
