TUCSON, Ariz. – Third-ranked Washington clinched the series vs. No. 6 Arizona, defeating the Wildcats 3-1 on Saturday at Hillenbrand Stadium.
In many ways, the Huskies' game 2 victory mirrored Friday's series-opening win. Arizona outhit Washington (8-6) for the second straight game. The Wildcats stranded eight batters on Saturday after leaving nine on in game 1.
The Wildcats (40-10, 17-3 Pac-12) have been unable to find the big hit in the series. Arizona was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and is now 2-for-20 in the series. Meanwhile the Huskies (41-7, 16-4 Pac-12) have just eight at-bats with runners in scoring position all series (3-for-8).
Washington's Taran Alvelo (21-4) outdueled a pair of Wildcat pitchers in another low-scoring affair at Hillenbrand. Alvelo struck out 11 Wildcats in the win while allowing one run on eight hits.
Alyssa Denham (11-4) took the loss in the start, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
Gina Snyder pitched a pair of scoreless innings to finish off the game.
Rylee Pierce knocked in Arizona's lone run of the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1. The tie stood until Washington plated two runs in the top of the fifth to grab a lead it would not relinquish.
Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza had two more hits in the game for Arizona and now owns a series-most five in the first two games.
