TUCSON, Ariz. – Dani Morgan hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning, helping top-ranked Florida State take game 3 of the teams' three-game series at Hillenbrand Stadium. The Seminoles topped the 12th-ranked Wildcats, 4-3.
The victory meant a series win for Florida State despite Arizona outscoring (17-12) and outhitting (25-16) the Seminoles in the series.Â
Â
On Sunday, the Cats (18-7) plated three early runs and held a 3-1 advantage over Florida State (25-2), but Morgan's three-run homer in the top of the fifth was the difference.
Â
UA had its opportunities to tie the game or re-take the lead, but could not convert. Arizona left runners in scoring position in four of the final five innings, including the bases loaded in the third.
Â
For six of the seven innings,
Alyssa Denham was terrific in the complete game against the nation's top offense. She allowed an unearned run in the second inning before a three-batter stretch changed the game in the fifth. Denham walked the FSU 3-4 hitters before Morgan homered to left give the Seminoles the lead. In all, she allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. She fell to 6-2 on the season with the loss.
Â
Reyna Carranco posted her third three-hit game of the season with her 3-for-3 effort in the game. She extended her hitting streak to seven games, a stretch in which she is hitting .583. She leads the team with a .434 average this season.
Â
Malia Martinez had the Wildcats' two RBI in the game on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the second, one of her two hits in the game.
Â
The loss wraps up the nonconference portion of Arizona's schedule. UA is set to host No. 24 Oregon in a three-game series next weekend at Hillenbrand. The Cats and the Ducks will meet Friday (6 p.m.), Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.).
