CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Arizona volleyball defeated Oregon State in thrilling fashion on Sunday morning in Corvallis, Oregon, picking up its first five-set victory of the season (25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12).
The win over Oregon State completed the Beaver State Sweep for the Wildcats, who, for the second consecutive season, picked up a road sweep of Oregon and Oregon State. The two wins vaulted Arizona over both the Ducks in and the Beavers in the Pac-12 standings with two weeks remaining in the season. Arizona improved to 14-14, 4-12 on the season while Oregon State dropped to 9-18, 3-13 Pac-12.
Arizona was able to limit its mistakes on Sunday, posting just 16 attack errors in the match, the fewest number of attack errors in a five-set match for the Wildcats in at least a decade. The Wildcats did not have an attack error in the decisive fifth set, which Arizona won 15-12. Arizona's 16 errors were a remarkable 20 fewer than Oregon State's 36, which lost despite posting 16 more kills (75-61), 14 more digs (108-94) and three more aces (7-4) in the match.
The difference in the match came at the net, where Arizona out-blocked Oregon State 13-7.
Zyonna Fellows had seven blocks, including two solo in the match.
Arizona had many impressive individual performances in the match, but none bigger than
Paige Whipple. The junior posted a monster double-double with 22 kills and 20 digs, Arizona's first 20-20 match since Kalei Mau's 23-kill, 20-dig performance vs. Washington on Oct. 23, 2016. Whipple also had a career-high-tying five blocks in the match.
Kamaile Hiapo, who tied Arizona's freshman mark for digs in a match earlier this season with 27, put her name alone atop the record book with a career-high 29 digs in the match, tied for 11th most overall in Wildcat history. Hiapo's 29-dig effort give her 301 this season, making her the fifth freshman in school history to cross the 300-dig plateau.Â
Hiapo and Whipple were two of Arizona's three Wildcats to post 20-plus digs in the match.
Makenna Martin, making her second start of the season after missing the first 23 matches of her senior season with a hamstring injury, had 20 digs on Sunday. It marks Martin's sixth career match with at-least 20 digs.
Julia Patterson finished one assist shy of her season high, but posted another stat-stuffing match, complete with her 13th double-double of the season. Patterson had 38 assists, 13 digs, five kills, four blocks and two aces.
Katie Smoot tied her career high with 19 kills. The junior added two blocks in the match.
Arizona will now return home for the final four matches of the 2019 season. Up first, Arizona welcomes a pair of ranked opponents to McKale Center. The Cats face Washington on Friday and Washington State on Sunday this weekend.
