Patterson's Near-Triple-Double Not Enough vs. #10 Washington

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona senior setter finished one kill shy of her second triple-double in four weeks, but the Wildcats fell in four sets (24-26, 25-21, 25-13, 25-13) on Friday night to 10th-ranked Washington in McKale Center.

Patterson, who became the first Power 5 Conference player to record a triple-double earlier this season at Utah (11/3), finished with 31 assists, 12 digs and nine kills, which was good for her 14th double-double of the season. The senior is second in the league in double-doubles and remains the only player in the conference to record a triple-double.

The Wildcats won the first set on Friday night, defeating the Huskies 26-24 and then hung with the visitors point-for-point until they surged away late in the second to win 25-21. Washington then closed the match with a pair of 25-13 victories in the third and fourth sets to win the match.

The loss ends a two-match winning streak for the Wildcats, who fall to 14-15, 4-13 Pac-12 this season. No. 10 Washington (22-5, 13-4 Pac-12) remained one game behind Stanford for the Pac-12 lead with three matches remaining in the regular season.

Junior outside hitter Paige Whipple kept her late-season surge going, finishing with a team-high 18 kills, marking her 12th consecutive match with at least 13 kills. The junior is averaging 4.53 kills/set over her last eight matches. Whipple added 11 digs, good for her eighth double-double of the season. Junior outside hitter Katie Smoot also finished in double digits with 11 kills in the match.

Freshman libero Kamaile Hiapo, the reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, led the Wildcats with 18 digs, one of four Wildcats with double-digit digs. Hiapo's 18 digs give her 319 this season, currently fourth most in UA freshman history. She needs 51 digs over the final three matches to tie Candace Nicholson (2010) for the Wildcat freshman record. Patterson (12), Whipple (11) and Makenna Martin (11) also finshed with 10-plus digs in the match.
