Danielle O'Toole and
Nancy Bowling teamed up to throw a two-hit shutout and the offense plated eight runs on 12 hits to give the Cats an 8-0, six-inning victory in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Katiyana Mauga and
Dejah Mulipola homered in the game, Arizona's NCAA-leading 72nd and 73rd home runs of 2017. For Mauga, it was her Pac-12-high 17th of the year and 84th of her career, three shy of tying the Arizona record.
Mauga, Mulipola and Mo Mercado all batted in two runs for UA.
Tamara Statman and
Mandie Perez also had RBI.
Danielle O'Toole allowed just two infield singles over five scoreless innings, picking up the victory to move to 23-2 on the year. O'Toole fanned three and walked one in the outing.
Nancy Bowling pitched the final inning, allowing just one walk to close out the game.
Dejah Mulipola hit a monster home run two batters in to give the Cats the early lead in the first. With two out and nobody on, the next four Wildcats would reach base, punctuated by a Tamara Staman RBI single to put the Cats up 2-0.
Reyna Carranco led off the fourth with a single and scored on an RBI double from
Mandie Perez.
Mo Mercado traded places with Perez on an RBI double of her own to make it 4-0 Wildcats.
The Cats' bats awoke in the sixth.
Alexis Dotson, a native of Las Cruces, led off the inning with a pinch-hit single and moved to second on a Perez bunt single. Mulipola followed with an RBI double before a sacrifice fly by Mercado made it 6-0.
Katiyana Mauga knocked a two-run homer to right-center to put the Cats ahead 8-0.

GAME 2 (#3 ARIZONA 11, NEW MEXICO STATE 1)
Â
Taylor McQuillin took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the Cats supported her with six home runs, two by
Katiyana Mauga, as Arizona defeated New Mexico State 11-1 in game 2.
Arizona put up two three-homer innings, including back-to-back-to-back home runs in the top of the seventh, helping Arizona plate 11 runs on 10 hits in the game.
Mauga's two homers brought her to 86 in her career, one shy of Stacie Chambers and the Arizona record. Her next opportunity will be this weekend at home vs. Oregon.
McQuillin was masterful, coming three batters shy of her first career no-hitter. Kelsey Horton led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to center field to end the no-no bid. The sophomore struck out 12 and did not walk a batter in her one-hitter. McQuillin improved to 14-1 with the victory.
Mo Mercado,
Alyssa Palomino,
Jessie Harper and
Reyna Carranco hit the other four homers for the Wildcats, who came one shy of tying their season-high for home runs in a game.
After being held hitless for the first three innings, the Cats found their bats in the fourth.
Dejah Mulipola led off with a single before
Mo Mercado and
Katiyana Mauga followed with back-to-back home runs to give the Cats a 3-0 lead.
Reyna Carranco hit Arizona's third homer of the inning, the first of her career, a two-run shot to make it 5-0.
In the sixth, Carranco plated Palomino with a sacrifice fly and
Tamara Statman hit a pinch-hit RBI double to give the Cats a 7-0 lead.
Mercado hit a one-out double in the top of the seventh, the first of four consecutive extra-base-hits for Arizona. Mauga, Harper and Palomino followed with back-to-back-to-back homers to give UA an 11-0 lead. The three straight homers marked the first time Arizona has accomplished the feat since 2015 at New Mexico State. Mauga was involved in both occurrences.
