A three-sport student-athlete at Arroyo Grande High School in California, where he holds the school’s shotput and discus records, Sean Shields took little time to make his mark at Arizona, bursting on the scene as a freshman in 2002. He was re-writing record books right away at Arizona, setting rookie records in the shot put and discus, records he still holds to this day. Sean put together an All-American career at Arizona and was the 2005 Pac-10 Champion in the shotput. In addition to his 2005 league title, Sean also was the Pac-12 runner-up on four occasions, twice in the shot put and twice in the discus. In all, Sean was a nine-time All-American at Arizona. Sean was one of the best throwers in the nation, whether competing for Arizona or Team USA in multiple international competitions. On June 10, 2006, Sean broke the Arizona shotput record with a mark of 65-11.75 and is currently second in Arizona history in the event; he’s fifth all-time in the discus with a distance of 200-8.
