2008 NCAA Champions 400 Freestyle Relay Team
In the final event of the 2008 NCAA Championships, the 400 freestyle relay team of Joel Greenshields, Nicolas Nilo, Albert Subirats and Darian Townsend and not only captured a national title of their own, but punctuated the Arizona men’s swimming and diving program its first team national championship. A furious finish from Joel gave the Wildcats a time of 2:49.01 in the relay, allowing Arizona to blow past Texas by some 94 points in the final team standings. Then-associate head coach Rick DeMont said, “You don’t get a lot of big times in life. That was one of the big times.” No doubt, it was a breakthrough year for head coach Frank Busch’s men’s program. The 400 freestyle relay team captured 60 All-American honors in their careers.
