Dear Merchant:
Another school year is upon us and we know you are busy preparing for the return of University of Arizona students and the beginning of a new year. We too are looking forward to the return of our student-athletes. And so before the hectic fall begins we thought we'd share with you a few reminders regarding how the eligibility of our student-athletes could be affected by the actions of our local businesses.
You may be aware that other institutions across the country are currently dealing with the challenges created by inappropriate actions by local businesses in their area. The eligibility of student-athletes and the reputation of the institution have been damaged by the actions of a few. To educate local businesses that may come in contact with our student-athletes about potential problems, we share the following information.
The NCAA prohibits student-athletes from receiving what the rules refer to as "extra benefits'' and "preferential treatment." The NCAA considers any special discounts or arrangements given to student-athletes and/or their friends or family that are not available to the general student-population or general public as impermissible. This would include but is not limited to free or reduced cost of admission to events or establishments and free or reduced cost of any goods or services or access not available to other students.
Many of you have been great supporters of the University of Arizona and UA Intercollegiate Athletics (or hopefully will be soon), and we wish to continue that relationship. We would however, like to ask you to assist us by remaining vigilant about abiding by NCAA rules in interactions you may have with our student-athletes. Please share this information with your employees.
If you have questions regarding this information now or in the future, please do not hesitate to contact the athletic compliance office at 520-621-4796.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
