When Arizona's Andrea Dutoit won the pole vault in the 2001 NCAA Track and Field Championships, she might have become one of the most unusual national champions. She carried a 4.0 GPA as a double major in physiology and molecular and cellular biology her senior year. On a full academic scholarship at Arizona, she didn’t compete in any sports at all as a freshman, she never even touched a pole until her sophomore year. In fact, the pole vault did not become and NCAA sport for women until 1998, but the minute Andrea learned to pole vault, the sport became a part of her. Andrea set and broke numerous school records in the pole vault her entire collegiate career. Her best vault is currently 3rd in the U of A track and field record books. After graduating from the U of A, Andrea continued to compete internationally in the pole vault, while attending medical school. As the world’s fifth ranked women pole vaulter in 2004 - Andrea tried to earn one of three spots for the Athens Olympic Games. In May of 2006, Andrea graduated from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Medical School. At the time of her induction, she was finishing an internship in general medicine and was planning to do her residency in Anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
