He earned All America and All Pac-10 honors in 1988 before capturing the 1989 U.S. Amateur Championship and being named 1989 U.S. Amateur of the Year. He was a member of the 1989 U.S. Walker Cup team and the 1989 U.S. World Amateur team. He played also in the 1989 U.S. Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open tournaments. During his UA career he won two individual tournament titles and was a member of UA’s 1987 Pac-10 championship team. He turned professional in 1990.
