A two-time All America selection, he was one of the top American collegiate discus throwers of his era. In 1963 he captured the first Western Athletic Conference discus championship, and in the same year set a UA school record of 184-5. He placed second in the NCAA discus in 1961 and third in 1962. He twice set school records in the javelin, and also set a national freshman record in the discus.
