Cats Take Down Lopes in Best Two of Three Exhibition Match

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona beat Grand Canyon in an exhibition match on Wednesday evening in McKale Center at ALKEME Arena. The Wildcats won the first two sets (25-17, 25-22) but a power outage ended the match at 27-27 in the third set.
The Wildcats won the first set, 25-17, after taking the lead at 12-11. Destiny Ndam-Simpson led all attackers with five kills and a .500 clip in the opening set. Carlie Cisneros followed with four kills and Journey Tucker tallied three kills to help Arizona hit .350 as a team. The Cats tallied two blocks and Tucker was involved in both to hold GCU to a .073 hitting percentage.
Arizona won the second set, 25-22. Ndam-Simpson and Kennedy Osunsanmi both had four kills in the set to lead the Wildcats offensively. GCU held the lead for most of the set but the Cats used four aces to take the lead and Gigi Whann served back-to-back aces.
The Cats were tied with the Lopes at 27-27 in the third set when the match ended due to a power outage. Cisneros led Arizona with four kills while Ndam-Simpson and Marina Vosloo had three kills each. The Wildcats' defense tallied four blocks, led by Vosloo who was involved in three of the blocks.
Arizona will head to New Mexico on Saturday, August 22 at noon MST for the final exhibition match before the season begins.
