TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona fought back from multiple deficits and forced overtime, but rival Arizona State pulled away late for a 75-69 victory Saturday afternoon at McKale Center.
The Wildcats (11-14, 2-12 Big 12) showed resilience throughout, erasing an early seven-point deficit and answering nearly every Sun Devil surge. Arizona led 17-13 after the first quarter and used its transition game to keep pressure on ASU, finishing with a 24-6 advantage in fast-break points and a 38-26 edge in the paint.
Noelani Cornfield led Arizona with a career-high 24 points and six assists, attacking off the dribble and converting six of 6sixfree throws. Sumayah Sugapong added 23 points, including three 3-pointers, while Tanyuel Welch provided 16 points and eight rebounds on 8-of-11 shooting. The Wildcats shot 40.3 percent from the field and a near-perfect 16 of 17 at the line.
Arizona State (21-6, 8-6) responded behind McKinna Brackens' 24 points and Gabby Elliott's 22. The Sun Devils shot 45.8 percent overall and hit eight 3-pointers, including key baskets in overtime.
After nine lead changes and nine ties, Arizona used a late 10-0 fourth-quarter run to seize momentum and tie the game at 61, eventually sending it to overtime. In the extra period, however, ASU capitalized on second-chance opportunities and timely perimeter shooting. The Sun Devils outscored Arizona 14-8 in overtime, taking their largest lead of the game in the final minute.
Arizona finished with 25 points off turnovers and 24 bench points, but was limited to 3-of-19 shooting from beyond the arc. ASU controlled the glass, out-rebounding the Wildcats 40-32.
The Wildcats will look to regroup on Tuesday, February 17th, at 6 p.m. MST at home against Colorado. This game will be aired live on ESPN+.
