TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona women's soccer erupted for five goals on Sunday afternoon to defeat in-state foe Grand Canyon, 5–2, at Murphy Field at Mulcahy Stadium.
The Wildcats (5-3-0) struck early, with Jessica Bedolla finishing in the sixth minute off a feed from Aurora Gaines. Gaines doubled the lead in the 20th minute, slotting home her third goal of the season from a Narissa Fults assist.
Grand Canyon (4-3-0) clawed back in the second half when Ellie Johannes scored in the 64th minute, but Arizona responded less than two minutes later. Defender Ella Hatteberg netted her second career goal off a setup from Sami Baytosh to restore the two-goal cushion.
Sophomore Ella Weathersby added her first collegiate tally in the 82nd minute, and Baytosh capped the scoring in the 90th minute off Weathersby's assist. The Lopes' Caprice Chiuchiolo provided a late goal in the 89th minute, but Arizona immediately answered to secure the win.
Olivia Ramey backstopped the Wildcats with seven saves, notching her fifth victory of the season. Arizona finished with a 19–16 edge in total shots and controlled 54 percent of possession.
The Wildcats now hold a 3-1-1 advantage in the all-time series with Grand Canyon. Next Thurday, the Cats will kick-off conrence play at Iowa State at 6 p.m. MST.
