Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. — Arizona scored five first-half goals and cruised to a 5-0 season-opening win over UNLV on Thursday night at Murphy Field at Mulcahy Stadium, matching its season high for goals scored from last year.
Aurora Gaines and Lily Boydstun each scored the first goals of their Arizona careers in the victory. Gaines struck twice early to put the Wildcats in control, and Boydstun added the third goal. Narissa Fults found the net later in the half, and an own goal capped the scoring.
Sami Baytosh recorded two assists for Arizona (1-0-0), while Boydstun and Rose Calkins each added one.
The Wildcats outshot the Rebels 15-6 and held a 60 percent possession advantage. Olivia Ramey needed just one save to earn the shutout.
Play was halted for a lightning delay 20 minutes into the second half, and the match also saw a stoppage when the stadium lights went out with about 20 minutes remaining.
UNLV (0-1-0) managed just two shots on goal, both stopped by Ramey. Goalkeeper Hanne Breur made four saves for the Rebels.
Arizona returns to action Sunday, hosting UC Irvine at 10:30 a.m. MST.
