FULLERTON, Calif. – No. 10 Arizona beat No. 23 San Diego State, 11-3, in six innings on Sunday to close out the Judi Garman Classic. The Wildcats improved to 21-2 and picked up their fifth win over a ranked team this season.
Arizona scored 11 runs on 13 hits – led by
Devyn Netz with three hits and
Emily Schepp with three RBI.
The Cats struck first for one run in the bottom of the first inning on a double from Netz to score
Sydney Stewart from first base.
In the top of the second, San Diego State took a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run. Arizona answered back with seven runs in the bottom of the second to take an 8-2 lead.
Tayler Biehl drove in the first run with an RBI single and
Kaiah Altmeyer followed with a two-run double to give Arizona a 4-2 lead. Stewart drove in the fourth run of the inning with an RBI single and
Paige Dimler drew a bases-loaded walk. Schepp drove in the final two runs of the inning with a two-run single.
The Aztecs hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to make it an 8-3 game.
Arizona scored three in the sixth to walk off San Diego State in a run-rule victory. Schepp led off the inning with a solo home run. Biehl took advantage of a fielding error by the Aztecs to give the Cats a 10-8 lead. With the bases loaded, Netz walked off SDSU with a single to right center.
In the circle,
Saya Swain picked up the win to improve to 3-1. She pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief and did not allow a hit or run to score while striking out two Aztecs.
Miranda Stoddard started the game in the circle and went 2.2 innings, allowing two runs while striking out two batters.
Ryan Maddox relieved Stoddard in the third inning and pitched 2.2 innings before Swain entered. Maddox struck out three but allowed one run to score.
