PHOENIX, Ariz. – No. 10 Arizona beat Grand Canyon 7-3 in eight innings on Wednesday night in Phoenix. The Wildcats improved to 27-4 with the win over the Lopes.
Arizona scored seven runs on six hits and
Miranda Stoddard hit a solo home run for the Cats.
Dakota Kennedy went 2-for-4 and
Devyn Netz led the team with two RBI.
Arizona scored the first run of the game in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead over GCU. With
Tayler Biehl on third base,
Regan Shockey singled to the pitcher and Biehl scored.
The Cats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh when
Miranda Stoddard hit a solo home run – her 10th of the season.
In the bottom of the seventh, GCU tied the game with a two-run home run.
Arizona plated five in the eighth to take a 7-2 lead over GCU. Biehl drove in the first run of the inning with a triple to left field. With runners on second and third, an error by GCU allowed Biehl to score to give Arizona a two-run lead. Netz then singled through the left side to drive in two runs and a third run scored from another GCU error to give the Cats a 7-2 lead.
The Lopes scored one in the bottom of the eighth on a single up the middle but Netz retired the final two batters to win the game.
Netz earned her 11th win of the season after pitching 3.0 innings in relief. She allowed two earned runs but struck out five Lopes.
Miranda Stoddard pitched the first four innings, giving up just one hit and keeping GCU scoreless.
Aissa Silva pitched the fifth inning and retired the three batters she faced.
