TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 11 Arizona beat No. 20 Stanford and UC Davis on the first day of the Hillenbrand Invitational to improve to 12-1 on the season.
Game 1 | No. 11 Arizona 4, No. 20 Stanford 1
The Cats won the first game of the night, 4-1, over the Cardinal. Arizona scored four runs and six hits and scored two runs on wild pitches.
After a scoreless first inning, Arizona plated its first run in the bottom of the second.
Jenna Sniffen hit a double and then scored on an RBI groundout from
Kaiah Altmeyer to score the first run of the game. In the third,
Devyn Netz scored on a wild pitch to give Arizona a 2-0 lead.
The Cats extended their lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning on an RBI triple from Altmeyer to score
Logan Cole from first base followed by Altmeyer scoring on Stanford's second wild pitch of the game.
In the top of the seventh, the Cardinal hit a solo home run to score their only run of the game.
Devyn Netz pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out seven batters to improve to 5-1. She retired eight straight batters to start the game.
Game 2 | No. 11 Arizona 7, UC Davis 2
Arizona beat UC Davis, 7-2, in the second game of the day.
Emma Kavanagh and
Sydney Stewart both homered in the win.
The Cats took an early 6-0 lead in the first two innings, scoring two in the first and four in the second. Stewart hit a two-run home run – her fourth homer of the season – in the first inning to put Arizona on the board. In the second,
Logan Cole hit a two-run triple and Altmeyer drove in a run with an RBI single. Stewart hit an RBI groundout to score Altmeyer for the fourth run of the inning.
In the fifth, Kavanagh hit a solo home run – the first of her career – to give the Cats a 7-0 lead over the Aggies.
UC Davis took advantage of fielding errors by Arizona to score two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Miranda Stoddard (3-0) picked up the win in relief after pitching 3.1 innings, striking out four Aggies and not giving up a hit.
Brooke Mannon started in the circle, going 0.2 before Stoddard entered in relief.
Sydney Somerndike faced four batters in the fifth, allowing one hit and striking out one Aggie before
Ryan Maddox entered the circle. She closed the game, going 2.1 innings and not giving up an earned run.
