Martinez Scores 20 in Win Over California

TUCSON - Esmery Martinez scored 20 points and every Wildcat who saw minutes scored in Arizona's 66-55 win over California in McKale Center on Saturday. The point total matched Martinez's season best.

In addition to every Wildcat scoring in the game, all seven players had at least one rebound and one steal. Jada Williams dropped in 13 points while Breya Cunningham, Helena Pueyo and Courtney Blakely each scored seven. 

The Wildcats (11-9, 3-5 Pac-12) did not allow a Cal (11-9, 3-5 Pac-12) field goal for over five minutes in the opening quarter, but despite the strong defensive effort Arizona went into the quarter break down by five.

The first half saw a balanced scoring effort by Arizona with six Wildcats putting the ball in the hoop. Martinez led the squad through the first two periods with nine points and three rebounds.

The Wildcats outscored Cal 23-11 in the third period on 70.0% shooting (7-of-10) to take an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter, and the team never looked back.

Skylar Jones got her first career start in the matchup, scoring six points on 2-of-2 shooting from the field. Jones gathered two rebounds, made three steals and an assist before dropping all six of her points in the third quarter.

Pueyo grabbed two steals on the day, good to move her to fourth in program history in career steals with 261. The fifth-year was responsible for seven points, four assists, three rebounds and a block. Isis Beh recorded an impressive stat line in the matchup as well, scoring six points, gathering three rebounds and dishing out three assists.

The Cats held the edge on the glass, 29-25, for their third consecutive game outrebounding their opponent. Arizona was dominant in the paint throughout the contest, scoring 36 points to Cal's eight. 

Arizona will welcome No. 6 Stanford to McKale Center Sunday, Jan. 28 for a 12:00 p.m. MST matchup. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
