PULLMAN, Wash. – Arizona fell in five sets, 25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 16-25, 14-16, to Washington State on Friday night.
Three Wildcats had 10 or more kills in the match.
Jaelyn Hodge led Arizona's offense with 16 kills, followed by
Sofia Maldonado Diaz with 14 kills and
Dilara Gedikoglu with 10 kills.
Kamaile Hiapo had 17 digs to lead Arizona's defense.
Arizona won the first set, 25-22, holding the Cougars to a .167 hitting percentage. Hodge led the Wildcats with four kills and a .667 clip.
Zyonna Fellows had three blocks to keep Washington State's offense at bay. The Wildcats served three aces, led by
Emery Herman's two aces.
Washington State tied the match with a 26-24 win in the second set. The Cougars took an early lead, but Arizona was able to come back and force the set into extra points.
Dilara Gedikoglu and Fellows each had four kills to lead the Wildcats on offense.
Arizona took the third set, 25-23. The Wildcat's defense had three blocks to hold the Cougars to a .051 clip in the set.
Alayna Johnson had two blocks to lead the defense. Maldonado Diaz found her rhythm in the third set, knocking down five kills for Arizona. Hodge tallied four kills and a solo block in the set.
The Cougars won Set 4, 25-16, to force a fifth set. Washington State took an early lead that the Wildcats couldn't catch in the fourth set. Hodge and Johnson each had three kills, but the Cougars hit .400 to take Arizona to five sets.
Washington State won the fifth set, 16-14, to win the match. The Cougars quickly took the lead in the fifth, but Arizona came back to tie the set at 13-13. Hodge and Maldonado Diaz each had a kill to tie the set before the Wildcats fell to the Cougars, 14-16.
Arizona will take on No. 15 Washington on Sunday, Oct. 22 on Pac-12 Networks.
