Wildcats Defeat Colorado in Four Sets

BOULDER, Colo. – Arizona beat Colorado in four sets on Friday night in Boulder. After dropping the first set, the Cats came back to win the next three sets. Sofia Maldonado Diaz set a career high of 26 kills and was one of three Wildcats to tally double-digit kills. Emery Herman, Kamaile Hiapo, and Puk Stubbe recorded double-doubles in the match.
 
Set 1 | Arizona - 23, Colorado - 25
Colorado edged out Arizona to win the first set 25-23. The Cats led the Buffaloes in hitting percentage, kills, digs, and blocks. Maldonado Diaz and Stubbe each had seven kills to open the match, but the Buffaloes served two aces to Arizona's zero aces to win the set.
 
Set 2 | Arizona - 25, Colorado - 16
The Cats dominated the second set to tie the match 1-1, hitting a match high .423. Maldonado Diaz added six kills in the second set, reaching a season high 13 kills while hitting .455. Maldonado Diaz also had a solo block in addition to Zyonna Fellows and Stubbe combining on two blocks to keep Colorado to a hitting percentage of just .097.
 
Set 3 | Arizona - 37, Colorado - 35
For the first time since 2005, the Cats played a set to 37-35 and won the set. In 2005, Arizona played two sets in seperate games to a score of 37-35, winning the set against Washington State in regular season and losing the set against then-No. 15 Ohio in the playoffs. Maldonado Diaz once again led Arizona's offense with nine kills and one ace followed by Jaelyn Hodge with seven kills. Hodge came alive in the third set, recording a solo block and three block assists. Once the set reached 25-25, Maldonado Diaz scored seven of Arizona's 11 points to push the Cats to the 37-35 win.
 
Set 4 | Arizona - 25, Colorado - 21
In the final set, Arizona was powered by Maldonado Diaz and Dilara Gedikoglu who tallied four kills each. Maldonado Diaz scored the match winning point with her 26th kill of the match, besting her previous career high by one kill. Herman recorded 13 assists in the set, setting a season high 52 assists to help lead Arizona to win the match.
