FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arizona Wildcats women's golf team advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Championships at The Blessings Golf Course on Tuesday, thanks to a dramatic putt from
Haley Moore on her final hole.
With Moore's putt, sixth-seeded Arizona downed No. 3 USC, 3-2, to advance to semifinal play on Wednesday, where the Wildcats will face No. 2 Duke. Moore found herself in a tense battle with USC's Gabriela Ruffels as the final match on the course with both sides having already won two.
The two started on the back nine and by the time they got to No. 9, the final hole of the match, they were all square. Moore sunk a dramatic 20-foot birdie hole to win the hole, the match and advance the defending national champions to the semifinals.
"I'm so proud of her," coach
Laura Ianello said. "Nobody deserves it more than her. She works so hard. She battled today, and I'm so proud of her."
Moore was trailing by three through six holes, before mounting a memorable comeback. She evened the matchup after 12 holes, and took her first lead of the match after winning No. 16. Ruffels won the 17
th hole to tie the match again. The two headed to the ninth hole, after starting on No. 10, where Moore sunk her birdie putt to win the match and advance Arizona to the semifinals.
Moore hit the National Championship-clinching putt last year for the Wildcats, and has experience in big spots. She stayed composed, even after a lengthy weather delay in Fayetteville.
"I took a lot of confidence out of that," Moore said of last season's clutch performance. "I think the weather delay really boosted my confidence. I knew I could hang around and play golf, and make it happen."
The Wildcats also got wins on the day from
Bianca Pagdanganan and
Ya Chun Chang. Both Pagdanganan and Chang won 2&1 to secure victories and help the Wildcats advance to the Final Four for the second straight year. Pagdanganan took the lead on the second hole and never trailed again. Chang was tied through 11 holes, but never looked back, winning holes 12, 13 and 14 to take a lead by three.
The Wildcats and Blue Devils will square off at 5 a.m., MST on Wednesday morning. The Golf Channel will have coverage throughout the round.
