Wildcats Go 2-0 to Open Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Arizona opened the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a Taylor McQuillin shutout over 20th-ranked Oklahoma State. McQuillin struck out 10 in UA's 3-0 victory over Oklahoma State in the UA's first game of the event. The Cats downed Long Beach State 12-3 in the nightcap, plating their 12 runs on a season-most 15 hits to go 2-0 on the day.

Arizona improved to 8-4 on the season with the sweep. Arizona's Saturday schedule has been reconfigured due to the rainouts on Thursday. UA will now play three times on Saturday, starting with a makeup game with UC Santa Barbara at 9 a.m. MST. The Cats will then play their two originally scheduled games vs. No. 4 Oklahoma at 11 a.m. and an exhibition game with Team Japan at 1:30 p.m.

Taylor McQuillin tossed her second consecutive shutout, striking out 10 in a 3-0 victory over No. 20 Oklahoma State for Arizona's second victory over a ranked team this season.

UA scored single runs in the first, second and third innings, enough support for McQuillin, who allowed just two hits in the seven innings.

UA was leading the 49ers 4-3 in the sixth inning and was down to its final strike in the frame. Two pitches later UA's lead was five after a two-run double from Reyna Carranco and a two-run homer by Harper. The Cats added four more runs of insurance in the seventh.

Alyssa Denham (4-1) earned the win for Arizona, pitching four innings and allowing three runs on five hits, all of which came in a big fourth inning for Long Beach State.
