WEEKLY NOTES

WILDCATS CARRY MOMENTUM INTO FINAL HOMESTAND
  • Arizona volleyball (14-14, 4-12) will finish up the 2019 regular season with four consecutive home matches, beginning this weekend when the Wildcats welcome a pair of top-25 teams to Tucson: #10 Washington (21-5, 12-4 Pac-12) and #22 Washington State (22-6, 11-5 Pac-12).
  • Arizona will look to carry momentum into the final two weeks of the season from last week's road sweep at Oregon and Oregon State.
  • Earlier this season, Arizona was swept at Washington State (0-3) and Washington (1-3). The Cougars and the Huskies also swept the Wildcats in 2018 when they came to Tucson.
  • The Wildcats will face the Huskies at 7 p.m. MST on Friday before taking on the Cougars on Sunday at 12 p.m. MST.
  • Last Week: Arizona is coming off its best weekend of the Pac-12 season; the Wildcats picked up a road sweep at Oregon (3-0) and Oregon State (3-2) last weekend, marking its second straight Beaver State road sweep dating back to 2018 ... Kamaile Hiapo was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after averaging 5.00 digs/set in the sweep, including an Arizona-freshman-record 29 digs vs. Oregon State.
  • What to Watch for: Arizona's sweep of Oregon State and Oregon last week vaulted the Wildcats from 12th in the Pac-12 to ninth and kept Arizona's NCAA Tournament hopes alive. With four matches remaining, all of which come vs. RPI teams No. 52 or better, the Wildcats will look to make a run at it in the last four matches of the season, all at home.

QUICK HITS
  • Pac-12 Freshman of the Week: Kamaile Hiapo was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for her critical role in Arizona's road sweep of Oregon and Oregon State. Hiapo averaged 5.00 digs/set on the weekend and had an Arizona-freshman-record 29 digs vs. Oregon State on Sunday.
  • Liberos in the Front Row: As the Wildcats continue in their season-long quest to get healthy, the lineup carousel continues as well; last week Makenna Martin, Arizona's libero in 2017 and 2018, made her first start of the season after missing the first 23 matches of her senior season with a back injury; however, due to concussions to three of Arizona's outside hitters/middle blockers, Martin was forced to play front row. 5-9 Martin replaced 5-7 Kamaile Hiapo at outside hitter, who moved back to her natural position of libero, replacing Emi Pua'a, who returned to Arizona's first defensive specialist off the bench.
  • Stat Sheet Stuffer: Julia Patterson, one of two Power 5 conference players to have a triple-double this season (11/3 at Utah), is second in the Pac-12 with 13 double-doubles this season. She led the Pac-12 with 20 of them last year. Ten of her 13 double-doubles this season have come in Pac-12 play, tied for the most in the league.
  • Patterson is the top attacking setter in the Pac-12, averaging 1.18 kills/set, currently the most kills/set by a UA setter since Dana Burkholder averaged 1.53 kills/set in 2001.
  • Earlier this season at California (10/13), Julia Patterson became the seventh player in Arizona history to record 3,000 career assists, moving into seventh place in Arizona history. She enters this week with 3,384 career assists, 133 shy of sixth in UA history.
  • Crossing .400: Devyn Cross leads the Pac-12 and is eighth nationally in hitting percentage (.418). Cross is trying to become the third Wildcat in school history, and first since Jill Talbot in 2001, to hit .400 in a season.
  • Concussed Cats: For the second straight season, the Wildcats are dealing with a handful of concussions. Three of UA's top six hitters -- Shardonee Hayes, Whittnee Nihipali and Elizabeth Shelton -- have missed nearly all of Pac-12 season with concussions. In their absence, Arizona has used a pair of liberos -- first Kamaile Hiapo for eight matches and now Makenna Martin -- in the front row.
  • Turning the Paige: Paige Whipple has been surging in recent weeks. The junior outside hitter is averaging 4.54 kills/set over her last seven matches after averaging 3.31/set over the first 21 of the season. Whipple is seventh in the Pac-12, averaging 3.65 kills/set this season.
  • Cut and Dry: The Wildcats are 14-1 when posting a better hitting percentage than their opponents and 0-13 when they are outhit by their opponent. UA is 7-1 when hitting .300 or better and 9-2 when holding its opponents to .200 or worse.
  • The Legend: Head coach Dave Rubio is in his 28th season as the Wildcats' head coach. Last season, Rubio became the second coach in Pac-12 history to surpass 500 victories as a league coach and currently has a career record of 524-335 (.615) at Arizona and ranks 15th among all active coaches in the NCAA with 646 career wins, including his 122 wins at Cal State Bakersfield.

#10 WASHINGTON HUSKIES (21-5, 12-4 Pac-12)
  • Team Notes: Washington comes the Tucson on a five-match winning streak, including a sweep of Colorado and a five-set win over #15 Utah last weekend in Seattle ... The Huskies enter the week second in the Pac-12, two games behind Stanford and one game ahead of Washington State and Utah ... UW is second in the league in blocks/set (2.81), led by Avie Niece (1.40/set) and Lauren Sanders (1.14).
  • Head Coach: Keegan Cook (5th season; 126-36)
  • Series History: Washington 44, Arizona 25

WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS (22-6, 11-5 PAC-12)
  • Team Notes: Washington State was won four of its last five matches, and split last weekend, falling in four sets to #15 Utah but defeating Colorado in five sets in Pullman ... The Cougars enter the week in a tie for third in the Pac-12, one match behind Washington for second place ... WSU is an excellent defensive team, ranking third in the league in both digs and blocks per set.
  • Head Coach: Jen Greeny (9th season; 154-136)
  • Series History: Arizona 46, Washington State 20
