Last Time Out
The Arizona Wildcats returned to Mulcahy for their first home game in two and a half weeks, resulting in a 5-2 victory over Oregon. In one of the most exciting back and forth games of the 2019 season, two Cats walked away with braces (Aguilera and Talley) and one with her third goal of the season (Hocking).
How May We Assist You
Forward Jada Talley is at the top of her game, lending seven assists and seven goals within the first 14 games of the season. She leads the Wildcats in goals, assists, and points. She earned her second brace of the season against Oregon where she broke a mid-game tie and gave the Cats a comfortable lead. Talley has now scored 15 career goals and has 10 career assists, putting her in an excellent position to break school records.
We "Hope" You're Ready
Freshman Keeper Hope Hisey has been a crucial asset for the Wildcats in the 2019 season. She has played in 11 of Arizona's 14 matches, with seven being every Pac-12 Conference game of the season. She has contributed to five of the Cats eight clean sheets, with two being against nationally ranked teams (UCLA & WSU), and has recorded a whopping 39 saves in her first career season.
Reaching Our Goals
Forward Brooke Wilson has stepped up this season in the goal department. Wilson has surpassed her career high of three goals set in 2018 by scoring six goals in 14 matches this season. In 2019 she is most famously known for the rocket shot from almost 40 yards away against UCLA. The goal landed her in the eighth spot on Sports Center Top 10 that night and continues to be talked about during every Arizona match since.
Continuity in the Back Line
Arizona returns all four of their back line members for the 2019 season. Last season, Morgan McGarry, Samantha Falasco, Hallie Pearson and Sabrina Enciso played the bulk of the minutes and allowed just 19 goals in 21 games, an average of 0.87 goals allowed per game. The quartet were instrumental in keeping nine clean sheets, including five straight during the non-conference slate, a program record.
Ranked
The Arizona Wildcats received their first taste of national fame last week, being ranked for the first time during the 2019 season. They came at 25th after only receiving one vote throughout the season.
Building A Legacy
Tony Amato has taken the Arizona soccer program to heights it has never seen before with four NCAA Tournament appearances in the last five years. In his six years at the helm, the Wildcats have finished .500 or better with at least nine wins in each year. The expectations for the 2019 squad are no different this year with 19 returners from last year's team that hosted the first round of the NCAA Tournament and were knocked out by a quality Tennessee opponent in the second round. UA brings back 72% of their scoring from the 2018 season, including Jada Talley who led Arizona with seven goals last year.
An Unprecedented Run
Head coach Tony Amato, Arizona's winningest coach of all time, has taken the Arizona soccer program to places it has never been. For starters, he has led the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament four of his first six years as head coach, including four of the last five seasons. Prior to his arrival, the team made the tournament just twice from 1994 to 2012. Additionally, his teams have never finished the season below .500 in his six years, while Arizona had a record of .500 or better just twice in the previous 19 seasons.
A New Face
For the first time since the 2016 season, someone other than Lainey Burdett will don the keeper shirt for the Wildcats. Redshirt freshman Kendyll Humphreys and Tucson product Hope Hisey will compete for the starting spot this season. Humphreys was a member of the 2018 squad, but did not see any action. Both keepers have each started games for the Wildcats this season.
