PULLMAN, Wash. -- Arizona volleyball fell in straight sets to No. 21 Washington State on Friday night in Pullman (25-20, 25-18, 25-17).
The Wildcats were without three hitters due to concussion in the match -- outside hitters
Whittnee Nihipali and
Elizabeth Shelton and middle blocker
Shardonee Hayes -- and were forced to use their normal libero,
Kamaile Hiapo, at outside hitter, a position she played in high school when she was an All-American at Skyline High School in Mesa, Arizona last year. Hiapo had three kills on nine swings in the match.
Paige Whipple led the way offensively for the Cats. The junior had 13 kills, her 13th double-digit-kill match of the season.
Julia Patterson had her eighth double-double of the season, posting 26 assists and 10 digs in the match. She was one of two Wildcats to post double-digit digs in the match;
Emi Pua'a led the wildcats with 12 on the night.
The Pac-12 leader in hitting percentage,
Devyn Cross, got back on track after a rough weekend in the Bay Area last weekend. Cross had seven kills on 12 error-free swings (.583).
The Wildcats struggled to slow down Washington State's offense in the match. The Cougars had 48 kills on .298 hitting.
Arizona dropped to 11-8, 1-6 Pac-12 on the season while Washington State improved to 16-3, 5-2 Pac-12. The Wildcats will now turn their attention to No. 10 Washington; the Cats and the Huskies face off in Seattle on Sunday at noon.
