TEMPE, Ariz. -- In a thrilling, back-and-forth, eight-inning series finale at ASU's Farrington Stadium, No. 13 Arizona defeated No. 8 Arizona State 4-2 to earn a huge series victory, its third straight territorial cup series win.
Two clutch hits from a pair of sophomores, a go-ahead two-run homer by
Alyssa Palomino in the sixth and a go-ahead two-run single by
Jessie Harper in the eighth, and dominant pitching by
Taylor McQuillin led the Cats to victory.
Entering the sixth inning on Sunday night, Arizona had managed just two baserunners off of Arizona State's G Juarez, the Pac-12's leader in ERA and strikeouts who had thrown 11 consecutive shutout innings against Arizona dating back to her game 1 victory.
Juarez's Sun Devils led the pitchers' duel 1-0 on a first inning fielder's choice.
Then, with two out and a runner at third base, sophomore
Alyssa Palomino hit her Pac-12-best 15th home run of the season, turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 Wildcat lead.
The Sun Devils wouldn't go quietly, however. Needing a run in the bottom of the seventh, Marisa Stankiewicz led off the inning with a home run to tie the game. Taylor Bacerra followed with a double to put the potential winning run at second with no one out, but
Taylor McQuillin retired the next three to send the game to extra innings.
In the top of the eighth,
Carli Campbell,
Reyna Carranco and
Alyssa Palomino singled to load the bases with one out.
Jessie Harper singled over the centerfielder's head to plate two runs and give the Wildcats a 4-2 lead.
McQuillin shut the door in the eighth to give the No. 13 Wildcats a 4-2, eight-inning victory in the finale.
Sunday's victory gave the Wildcats the series win at Arizona State, their first road series victory over a top-10 opponent since defeating No. 4 Washington two-of-three games in 2012. Arizona, which is set to begin a seven-game homestand on Wednesday, improved to 31-13, 8-10 Pac-12. Arizona State fell to 35-9, 9-6 Pac-12.
McQuillin was dominant in the circle for the Wildcats. She got the victory to improve to 20-9 on the season. McQuillin allowed two runs on six hits in the complete-game effort. She struck out 11 and walked just one in the game. She outdueled ASU's Juarez, who gave up four runs on eight hits; the four runs she surrendered were the most since opening day.
A leadoff double helped Arizona State score first in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead.
In the sixth,
Ashleigh Hughes was hit by a pitch with one out. She stole second and moved to third on a
Reyna Carranco fly out. Then,
Alyssa Palomino, who entered the at-bat 0-for-9 in the series, hit her 15th home run of the season to center to give the Wildcats the lead.
ASU tied the game with a home run in the seventh.
Three singles loaded the bases for Harper with one out in the eighth. The sophomore singled to center to score two and give the Wildcats a 4-2 lead in the extra inning. McQuillin shut the door in the home half to close out the game.
