TEMPE, Ariz. -- No. 8 Arizona State walked off with a 2-1 victory in game 1 of the three-game series against No. 13 Arizona on Friday evening at Farrington Stadium.
The Sun Devils had two hits against
Taylor McQuillin, a home run in the fourth and a walkoff double in the bottom of the seventh. McQuillin (19-9) struck out 10 in the game and allowed just three total baserunners, but Arizona's offense couldn't support the gem.
Ashleigh Hughes hit a leadoff homer in the top of the first, but it would be the only production in the game for the UA offense. ASU's G Juarez retired the final 15 Wildcats; she struck out 13 and allowed three hits with one walk. Juarez, the Pac-12's leader in strikeouts and ERA, improved to 19-2 on the season.
Hughes had two of UA's three hits in the game, including her homer, and also made a catch at the top of the wall, denying ASU's Danielle Gibson of extra bases, perhaps a home run in the fourth.
Arizona fell to 29-13, 6-10 Pac-12 while Arizona State improved to 35-7, 9-4 Pac-12. The two teams meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m. MST.
Hughes led off the game with a home run, her fifth homer of the season and second leadoff home run in UA's last two conference games.
ASU's first hit of the game was a home run, slapped to right, by its leadoff hitter Kindra Hackbarth to tie the game in the fourth inning.
The two home runs by the opposing leadoff hitters were the only runs until the Sun Devils got a walkoff double from Gibson in the bottom of the seventh.
