OFF THE TOP
  • The Arizona Wildcats open their 2018-19 season Wednesday night at McKale Center versus Houston Baptist. It's the ninth time in 10 years under Sean Miller that the Wildcats have opened at home.
  • Arizona is 82-3 in its last 85 games at McKale Center. The Wildcats open the season having won 47 consecutive home games against non-conference opponents. Under Sean Miller, Arizona has not lost a non-conference home game since the start of the 2012-13 season. Arizona's last home loss in November came in 2011 versus San Diego State.
  • Arizona is 9-0 in season-opening games under coach Sean Miller with an average margin of victory of 19. Arizona's widest margin of 48 came in 2010 in a 90-42 win over Idaho State. The Wildcats haven't lost a season opener since 2006 at Virginia.
  • Houston Baptist will make its second-ever trip to McKale Center on Wednesday night to face Arizona. The Huskies suffered a seven-point loss to the Wildcats in 1984.
  • Arizona posted a pair of exhibition wins leading up to Wednesday's season opener. The Wildcats hit a combined 22 3-pointers in the pair of wins and shot 43 percent from deep in the two wins.
  • Sophomore guard Brandon Randolph led the team in scoring, averaging 19.5 points per game in the two exhibition contests and went 9 for 10 from 3-point range over the two games.
  • Arizona last opened the season against a school from Texas in 1993-94 when the Wildcats defeated the Baylor Bears 106-79 in Tucson.
  • November 7 is the earliest Arizona has opened a season since 2011-12. Arizona defeated Valparaiso 73-64 at McKale Center to open that campaign.
  • Freshman  Brandon Williams led all scorers in Arizona's final exhibition game against Chaminade with 23 points. Williams was 9 for 16 from the field and added three assists and two steals.
THE LAST TIME
Arizona opened its 1984-85 season with a home contest against Houston Baptist University. The Wildcats got by the Huskies, 63-56 in front of 9,570 fans at McKale Center. Morgan Taylor led the Wildcats in scoring with 13 points and Keith Jackson added 10. Sophomore guard Steve Kerr had four points and two rebounds. Houston Baptist outrebounded Arizona 37-25, but couldn't overcome a five-point halftime deficit. Arizona shot 51 percent from the field and went on to start the season 7-0. Arizona finished the 84-85 season 21-10 and lost to Alabama in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

EXHIBITION TIDBITS
  • Arizona used the same starting lineup of Brandon Randolph, Brandon Williams, Ryan Luther, Justin Coleman and Ira Lee in the first two exhibition games.
  • Brandon Randolph shot 90 percent (9 for 10) from 3-point range in the two exhibition games.
  • Randolph led the team in scoring with 19.5 points per game.
  • Brandon Williams scored 23 points in Arizona's 75-64 win over Chaminade.
  • Against Chaminade, Randolph, Coleman and Williams scored Arizona's final 24 points of the game. Randolph had 12 of the 24.
  • Redshirt junior captain Chase Jeter made his Arizona debut against Chaminade and had six rebounds in 17 minutes.
  • Arizona outrebounded its two exhibition opponents 85-66.
  • Junior Dylan Smith had 12 total rebounds in the two games from the guard spot to tie Ryan Luther for the team lead.
  • Williams led the team in minutes played, averaging 29 minutes in the two contests.
"C" IS FOR CAPTAIN
Senior guard Justin Coleman and junior big man Chase Jeter were elected co-captains of the Wildcats prior to the season. And in a new wrinkle, both players will wear a "C" on their jerseys to display the honor. Jeter missed the opening exhibition game with an injury that coach Sean Miller labeled as "short-term." Coleman started and played 22 minutes, leading the team with six assists. He also added five rebounds and four points in the win. Interestingly, both players are transfers and have yet to play a regular season game for the Wildcats. Jeter began his career at Duke, while Coleman began at Alabama, before transferring to Samford.

RANDOLPH WINS GOLD JERSEY HONORS
In every Arizona practice, one player wears a gold jersey, while the rest wear red or blue. The gold jersey is given to the player who has totaled the most points in practice in a variety of categories. Coach Sean Miller charts several different areas during practice, including scoring, rebounding, assists, turnovers, hustle plays and several others. Junior big man Chase Jeter and senior forward Ryan Luther each won the gold jersey during the first weeks of practice. Freshman guard Brandon Williams then earned the gold jersey for Halloween week. Sophomore guard Brandon Randolph is now the winner of the gold jersey, currently wearing it in practice. Randolph had a strong pair of exhibition games to go with his strong practice performance. Randolph averaged 19.5 points per game in the two exhibition contests to lead the squad.
