No. 11 Oregon State Edges Out Arizona 65-57

TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 11 Oregon State (22-2, 11-1 Pac-12) came away victorious over the Arizona Wildcats (11-12, 2-10 Pac-12) in a tightly contested contest on Sunday afternoon in McKale Center. After 40 minutes of basketball, the Beavers had a 65-57 edge on the scoreboard.

"I thought we really fought," head coach Adia Barnes said. "You know it's just hard when you're almost there. It was tough the way we started because we've had slow starts so I changed up the press and I think it really helped our intensity, but those shots were right there. Lucia and Malena I think started out 0-8 in the beginning of the game, but if we would've hit those shots then we are not in that deficit in the beginning. But I think we rallied back. At times I felt like we controlled the game."

Breanna Workman followed up her double-double on Friday with a season-high 17 points and eight rebounds. The senior averaged 15.5 points points and nine boards this series. 17 points also ties her career-high.

After scoring a season-low six points against Oregon on Friday, LaBrittney Jones scored 13 points on Sunday. She had seven alone in the first quarter.

Oregon State dominated the glass as they outrebounded the Wildcats 41-23 on the day. The Beavers outscored Arizona 36-28 in the paint as well. Arizona did do a good job in the turnover department though as they won the turnover battle 19-12. 12 turnovers is the fewest Arizona has committed since Jan. 8 when they had 10 against Utah.

The two teams played good defense in the first quarter as there was just 27 combined points in the first 10 minutes. Oregon State held a 16-11 lead going into the second period. The second quarter was tightly contested as the Beavers outscored the Wildcats just 16-14, giving Oregon State a 32-25 lead at the half.

Oregon State edged out Arizona in the third quarter 14-13, giving them a 46-38 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Wildcats forced six Beaver turnovers in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was back and forth the entire time as it ended in a 19-19 tie, but that was enough to give the Beavers the victory.

The Wildcats will hit the road next weekend as they visit the Washington Huskies on Friday, Feb. 10 with tipoff set for 9 p.m. MST on the Pac-12 Networks.
