Senior left-hander
Danielle O'Toole tossed her first shutout of the season Saturday afternoon, lifting the 10
th-ranked Wildcats to a victory over the 21
st-ranked Bears.
O'Toole, who started Arizona's season opener against Fordham and held the Rams to one run, twirled a gem Saturday afternoon against the Bears. The senior from Upland, Calif., scattered five hits over seven innings. She didn't allow a walk, and struck out five, lowering her ERA to 0.33 on the season. She's now 2-0 on the season.
O'Toole didn't need much help offensively, but the Wildcats gave it to her anyway. Scoreless in the fourth, Mauga blasted her second home run of the season to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The home run was Mauga's 69
th of her career.
Mauga's home run remained the only run of the game until the bottom of the sixth when the Wildcats tacked on three more runs.
Ashleigh Hughes opened the inning with a single to the pitcher and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Mandie Perez. Freshman catcher
Dejah Mulipola then struck for an inside-the-park home run to centerfield to score Hughes and make it 3-0.
Arizona added another insurance run later in the inning.
Alyssa Palomino singled and then was pinch-run for by
Eva Watson. Watson advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored on a two-out single from
Mo Mercado to make it 4-0.
That was plenty for O'Toole, who got a foul out, ground out and strike out in the seventh inning for a 1-2-3 inning to finish off her shutout.
Arizona pitchers have combined to throw 20 straight scoreless innings after O'Toole's gem.
The Cats finished with seven hits with Mercado and Mulipola each finishing with a pair of hits. Mulipola went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored. Mercado went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Hughes was 1 for 2 with a run scored. Kelsee Selman took the loss for Baylor, tossing 5 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out three. She dropped to 1-1.
Arizona 11, Northwestern 3
In Arizona's second and final game of the day,
Nancy Bowling pitched three effective innings in relief to earn her first win of the season and lead Arizona to a run-rule victory.
Bowling pitched three innings, allowing two runs and striking out four.
The Cats wasted no time putting up runs to give the pitching staff plenty of support. Arizona scored four in the first, started by a
Mandie Perez single to right field. Perez advanced to second on a wild pitch and then moved over to third after a single from Mulipola. Mauga then cleared the bases with a three-run home run to give Arizona an early 3-0 lead.
Arizona added another run when
Jessie Harper picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice, scoring Mercado.
Starting pitcher
Taylor McQuillin posted a scoreless second to get the Cats back to the plate up four. Arizona tacked on three more in the second to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Hughes started the inning with a single and moved to third after a wild pitch and a bunt single from Perez. Mulipola then scored Hughes on a sacrifice fly.
Tamara Statman added another run on a bases loaded walk and then pinch-runner
Jaycee Lindley capped the scoring when she scored on an error.
McQuillin gave up a run in the third and was replaced by Bowling before recording an out. Bowling got out of the inning without any further damage to keep the score 7-1. That remained the score until Arizona added two more in the fourth to make it 9-1. Mauga doubled with one out and then moved to third on a single from Mercado. Mauga scored on an error by the catcher and then Statman brought Mercado home with a double.
Northwestern scored two runs in the fifth to make it 9-3, but Arizona ended the game in the bottom half when Palomino doubled to score Perez and Hughes to end the game.
Perez went 3 for 3 with three runs scored and a walk. Mulipola, Mauga, Statman and Mercado all had two hits in the win.
