Barnes Earns First Win, Arizona Beats Alcorn St. 74-59

TUCSON, Ariz. – Head coach Adia Barnes earned the first victory of her career as she led the Wildcats to a 74-59 victory over Alcorn State on Sunday afternoon.

"It's awesome to have win number one," Barnes said. "It was a good challenge, playing against a really fast team and a team that is good at penetrating. It was a good test, and it showed some areas we need to get better in."

Senior LaBrittney Jones got off to a good start as she recorded her first double-double of the season by scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. 12 of those points came in the second half. Jones also blocked four shots, giving her 103 for her career.

Fellow senior Malena Washington scored 13 points for Arizona and also dished out three assists.

Sophomore Destiny Graham had a nice game in the post as she scored eight points, had 11 rebounds and blocked two shots.

Freshman Lucia Alonso had a nice debut as she started and scored 10 points, had six assists and four rebounds.

The Wildcats outrebounded the Braves 54-43 and blocked 12 shots. It was also a good day at the line as Arizona shot 12-14 from the charity stripe.

Arizona forced the Braves into some poor shooting as they shot 29.5% from the field for the game. The defense in the second half was exceptional as they forced Alcorn State into shooting 10-38 for the half.

The third quarter by Arizona was the difference in the game as they outscored Alcorn State 21-12 in the period.

Arizona will travel to Fairfax, Va. later on this week to face George Mason on Friday, Nov. 18. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. MST.
