Wildcats Battle, But Fall to Buffs on Friday

Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz.--- The two teams were tied at the half and traded leads on six separate occasions, but Colorado was able to outlast Arizona, 66-51, Friday night inside McKale Center.

Sophomore forward Breanna Workman scored 10 points on a perfect 3-of-3 from the field and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds in 25 minutes of action.

Junior guard Keyahndra Cannon also poured in 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting off the bench, while senior guard Candice Warthen recorded eight points and a game-high equaling four assists.

Sophomore LaBrittney Jones made her presence felt on the defensive end, as she recorded a game-high tying three blocks, giving her 24 blocked shots over her last 11 games.

Arizona's bench dominated, outscoring the Colorado reserves 22-5, while the Wildcats have now won the battle of the benches in 15 of the last 25 contests. UA has also had at least one double-figure scorer come off the bench in 10 of its last 13 games.

Arizona (9-19, 2-15 Pac-12) shot 16-of-21 from the free throw line for 76.2 percent, marking the 13th time the Wildcats have shot 70 percent or better from the charity stripe. UA also won the points off of turnovers battle 13-10.

The Buffaloes (13-15, 6-11 Pac-12) struck first in this one, claiming a 9-3 lead with 16:01 left to play in the first half, but the Wildcats had an answer, as they launched an 8-0 scoring run of their own to claim an 11-9 advantage with 13:27 remaining in the half. Arizona at one point connected on three consecutive shots from the field during the run.

The game stayed close throughout, as no team owned a lead higher than five points the rest of the period. Arizona eventually ended the half on a mini 5-0 run to make it a 28-28 contest at the intermission.

The Wildcats struck first in the second half, as JaLea Bennett knocked down a jumper from the right wing to put UA back in front, 30-28 with 19:48 left to play.

The two sides continued to keep things close just like they did in the first half, as the Wildcats put themselves in position to complete a rally, after Cannon finished a layup to cut Colorado's lead to 51-44 with 5:21 remaining.

However, in the end the Buffs were just too much to handle inside, outscoring UA 20-4 in the paint in the second half en route to the victory.

The Wildcats will wrap up the regular season, Sunday at 3 pm MST against Utah inside McKale Center. The game will serve as Arizona's senior day, as seniors Candice Warthen and Alli Gloyd will be honored before the contest. Fans can watch the action live on the Pac-12 Networks or listen locally on KTUC 1400 AM.
