Wildcats Drop Close Game at San Diego

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Despite 10 points each from Breanna Workman and Malena Washington, the Arizona Wildcats suffered their first loss of the season Saturday evening 59-54 to the University of San Diego.

Arizona outrebounded San Diego and posted more assists than the Toreros, but couldn't pull out a second road victory this season.

The Wildcats worked to climb back from an early hole and pulled even once and within two several times.

The Toreros opened the game on an 8-0 run. Four of their early eight points came from the free throw line. The Wildcats got on the board with 4:45 to play in the first quarter when junior guard Malena Washington hit a jump shot.

San Diego extended its lead to 13-4 with just more than a minute to go in the quarter when Malina Hood connected on a pair of free throws. But the Wildcats started battling back and cut into the lead. Taryn Griffey hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter for the third straight game to cut it to 13-7. Breanna Workman than hit a pair of free throws to get it to 13-9.

The Toreros scored the final basket of the quarter to take a 15-9 lead after one.

San Diego then built a 21-15 lead with 4:30 to play in the half before the Wildcats again started marching back. Lauren Evans hit a bucket to cut it to four and then Keyahndra Cannon, playing in her home town of San Diego, hit a baseline jumper to make it 21-19. The Wildcats tied the game for the first time when junior Dejza James hit a layup with 1:31 left in the first half.

San Diego scored the final four points of the quarter on a pair of jumpers from Aubrey Ward-El to take a 25-21 lead at the break.

Griffey played 13 minutes in the first half and had five points and two rebounds. James and Evans each had four points in the first. James, making her season debut, also added five rebounds in 11 minutes.

In the third, San Diego extended its four-point halftime lead and grabbed a 40-30 lead with 3:06 to play in the third on a jumper from Maya Hood. With the score 42-32, the Wildcats started to claw back. Malena Washington twice cut it to seven points on back-to-back Arizona buckets. Washington then found James for a layup as time expired in the third to make it a five-point game.

In the fourth, San Diego stretched its lead to nine less than two minutes into the quarter. The Toreros held a similar lead for most of the quarter until the Wildcats cut it to 56-52 with less than a minute to play. But the Toreros capitalized on their opportunities at the free throw line and finished the game.

All total, San Diego shot 17 for 22 from the free throw line. The Wildcats were five of nine. Arizona shot 41 percent from the field in the loss, getting four field goals apiece from Washington and James. James finished with eight points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes.

Malina Hood led San Diego with a game high 20 points. Maya Hood added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Wildcats will look to rebound Monday morning when they host the Kansas Jayhawks at 11 a.m.
