LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The UCLA Bruins (6-6) were on their game on Friday, Oct. 9 as they defeated the 15th-ranked Arizona Wildcats (8-3-1) by a score of 5-1.
There was not an absence of action early in the match as Gabi Stoian started things off with a quick first-minute shot, but it went wide. Just a couple minutes later, UCLA got on the board with a goal by Darian Jenkins off a corner kick to make the score 1-0.
In the seventh minute, Hannah Wong went down and took her first shot of the game, which went wide. On the ensuing UCLA possession, they went down and took another shot, which hit the crossbar and rolled to safety.
UCLA extended their lead to 2-0 in the 22nd minute after Amber Munerlyn put one in the back of the net off an assist from Zoey Goralski.
Wong was able to get a shot on target in the 28th minute, but UCLA goalkeeper Siri Ervik made her first save of the night and ended the Arizona attack.
The Bruins got another goal to make the score 3-0 in the 36th minute. Kodi Lavrusky scored the goal for UCLA and was assisted by Zoey Goralski. The two teams went to the locker rooms for halftime with the score at 3-0.
Just 23 seconds into the second half, UCLA was awarded with a penalty kick. Annie Alvarado stepped up to the spot and put it in the back of the net, making the score 4-0 Bruins.
Arizona goalkeeper Rachel Estopare made back-to-back saves in the 62nd minute as UCLA was able to get two quick shots on target. She finished the night with four saves.
In the 64th minute, Claire Winter scored for the Bruins again off an assist by Cerda and Lainey Burdett was subbed on for Estopare in the goal after UCLA scored their fifth goal of the night.
Charlotte Brascia took her first shot of the night from distance in the 69th minute and it looked to be on goal. As it got closer to the goal, it drifted just wide left of the net. On the ensuing UCLA possession, Burdett made her first save of the night.
Arizona refused to be blanked on the scoreboard as Chelle Mahoney scored her first-career goal in the 86th minute and was assisted by Jessica Nelson. Nelson now has three assists on the season.
Neither team found the back of the net again and the match ended in a 5-1 UCLA victory. Arizona is back in action on Sunday afternoon as they take on the USC Trojans at 3:30 p.m. MST in Los Angeles on the Pac-12 Networks.
