No. 5 Stanford Scores in OT, Defeats No. 17 Arizona 3-2

TUCSON, Ariz. – Fifth-ranked Stanford (9-2, 3-0 Pac-12) scored in the 103rd minute en route to a 3-2 victory over No. 17 Arizona (8-2-1, 2-1 Pac-12) on Sunday, Oct. 4 at Mulcahy Stadium in Tucson, Ariz.

The match lasted approximately 102 minutes and featured 28 shots by Stanford, while Arizona took just 10. Rachel Estopare got the start again in goal and made five more saves. The Cardinal did what they do best and finished with nine corner kicks to Arizona's two.

Neither team could get anything going in the first few minutes, but Stanford was controlling the possession.

At the eighth minute, Gabi Stoian stood over the ball for a free kick from about 30 yards away and took a shot. It was blocked by the Stanford wall and Stoian regained possession and took another shot, but this effort went over the crossbar.

Arizona broke the seal in the 21st minute with a Jaden DeGracie goal. Paige Crouch collected the ball off a rebound and fired one towards the cage. The ball happened to go right to DeGracie and she back heeled it into the goal, making the score 1-0 Arizona.

Just two minutes later, Haley Rosen equalized for the Cardinal off an assist from Laura Liedle. She received the ball and took one touch and fired a shot from about 30 yards away. The ball made it past Estopare and hit the back of the net.

In the 31st minute, Stanford took the lead after Andi Sullivan scored one of the best goals you will see all season in college soccer. She took a shot from over 30 yards out and it kissed the left post and went into the goal, giving Estopare no chance at making a save.

Halftime came and went, and then Arizona equalized in the 71st minute.

Stoian received the ball about 50 yards away from the goal and started dribbling up field. A Stanford defender finally challenged her about 25 yards out and Stoian made her miss and she had a good chance to shoot. She took the shot and placed it into the left corner of the goal, making the score 2-2.

Stoian now has six goals this season and 19 for her career.

Stanford had another good opportunity in the 79th minute. The Cardinal attacker just had to get past Sheaffer Skadsen, but the reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week made a great block by sliding in front of the ball, ending the attack.

With under two minutes left, Stanford looked to score the game winner, but it was called back due to offsides and the match went to extra time for the third season in a row.

Arizona's only real chance came in the 94th minute as Cali Crisler crossed a ball into the box from the left side. She was looking for Stoian who had some space, but Stanford keeper Jane Campbell was able to collect it.

Two minutes into the second half of extra time, Stanford played a ball into the goal box and neither team could really corral it. After a scrum for a few seconds, Kyra Carusa was able to get a foot on it and scored, effectively ending the game by a score of 3-2.

Arizona heads to Los Angeles, Calif. next weekend to take on UCLA on Fri. Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. PT and USC on Sun. Oct. 11 at 3:30 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
