TUCSON – Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Harris had 13 kills on just 28 attacks as No. 15 Arizona volleyball defeated Utah in straight sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-14) on Saturday night in McKale Center.
The Wildcats (18-6, 7-5 Pac-12) hit .296 in the match, their best hitting percentage since Oct. 8. Harris hit .464 to lead the Cats while Taylor Arizobal hit .438 on 16 swings (seven kills). Madi Kingdon led all players with 14 kills.
UA held Utah (12-11, 2-10) to a .181 hitting percentage in the match. Arizona outblocked Utah 9-4, led by Rachel Rhoades, who was in on six blocks. Ronni Lewis had 19 digs, one away from her sixth 20-plus-dig match.
In the opening set, Kingdon was on fire, picking up nine kills on just 16 swings, leading Arizona, which trailed early in the set, to a 25-19 opening-set victory.
In the second, Arizona was able to overcome a .171 hitting percentage and an early four-point hole using two Rachel Rhoades kills to break a 23-23 tie to win the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Cats cruised in the second set, leading 5-1 out of the gates and never looking back. Harris had six kills on eight attacks in the frame as UA cruised to a 25-14 win in the third set.
Arizona is back in action on Friday against Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. The Cats and the top-ranked Cardinal meet at 8:30 p.m. MST.
