Arizona Goes To Double Overtime, Draws 1-1 With Cal

Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Arizona Wildcat soccer team went to overtime for the second-straight match. This time, against the California Golden Bears, Arizona played all 110 minutes and tied with a final score of 1-1. The team moved to 9-5-2 (3-4-1 Pac-12) on the year. On senior day for the Wildcats, they ended the home slate of matches with a record of 6-2-1 for the season.

“I think our senior group is great,” Amato said. “They've been through different coaches and four years of hard work and it's paying off for them. It's probably their last home game here but today was a moment to honor them but not say goodbye. We have three big games and hopefully more after that.”

“It was a hard game,” head coach Tony Amato said. “They are one of the top teams in the country and I couldn't be prouder. One of the things that we said is that we can have no regrets if we lay it on the line, we'll live with the result. I think we have no regrets today.”

Arizona pressured Cal early and often high up the pitch, causing turnovers and winning back possession when they lost it. The best scoring chance came when freshman Gabi Stoian and senior Alexandra Doller played a 1-2, leading to Doller having a one-on-one with the goalkeeper of Cal but her left-footed shot was right at the keeper. Seconds later, Stoian won the ball and also fired a shot with her left foot but Cal's keeper was up to the task, jumping high to catch it.

Junior Kaitlyn Lopez subbed on and made a nice impact on the match for the Wildcats. She made a threatening run down the right wing, playing a ball back into the middle of the 18-yard box but nobody could get on the end of it. Later in the half, Stoian's corner kick was flicked on by junior Hayley Estopare and Lopez then heel flicked it back towards the goal but Cal's back post defender blocked it to prevent a goal.

After a throw-in, there was a loose ball in the box that Stoian recovered, took a touch and then fired but it squared the post. Then, seconds later, Stoian again recovered a loose ball and fired a shot with her left foot into the bottom right corner of the goal at the 42:40 mark. It seemed like the goalkeeper was blinded and couldn't see it until it was too late. It was the 10th goal of the season for Stoian. Her 10 goals are tied for the fifth-best total for a single season in UA history.

Before the conclusion of the first half, there was yet another scrum for the ball in the six-yard box in front of the Cal goal. Stoian took a shot that was blocked by the Cal defense and then senior LeeAndra Smith took a crack at it but her shot went just wide left of the post.

In the first half, Arizona had nine shots and four were on target. They committed seven fouls and won one corner kick. Senior Mykaylin Rosenquist was assessed a yellow card at the 16:03 mark. Cal had six shots, three were on target and UA senior goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman saved each of them. The Golden Bears committed two fouls, won three corner kicks and were called offside once.

Early in the second half, junior Lexe Selman rocketed a shot from the 18-yard box with her left foot and drilled the left post. At around the 60th minute, Lopez won back possession for the Wildcats, played a through ball to Doller who then played a beautiful ball into the 18-yard box but nobody could connect on it as it went all the way across the face of the goal.

The Wildcats had another great scoring chance but were unable to convert due to the post on the goal again. Stoian's corner found senior Julia Glanz at the far post. Her shot hit the right post and then deflected to freshman Cece Bilginer who had a go but her shot was blocked by the Cal defense. The ball was still loose in the box but then the referee called a foul on UA to break up the scoring chance.

Cal's first goal came at the at the 72:55 mark when Taylor Comeau shot from outside the 18-yard box and it took a bad deflection off junior Sheaffer Skadsen. Kaufman was moving in the opposite direction and couldn't get back to save the ball off the deflection and it went into the net to tie the game.

“The goal was a deflection,” Kaufman said. “After the game, coach (Amato) told us that it took a deflection for them to score on us. It was a hard-fought battle, they are a good team and we outcompeted them for most of the game.”

In the 86th minute, Arizona won a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Stoian took it and her shot missed high and wide of the target. Seconds later, Stoian received a great through ball from Doller. The Cal goalkeeper came off her line to save Stoian's shot with her legs. Stoian then recovered the ball and shot again as the keeper was out but it went high and wide of the target.

In the 89th minute, DeGracie had a dangerous flip throw-in for the Wildcats but nobody could connect on it. The ball was played out to Skadsen who sent it back in, Cal's keeper saved DeGracie's headed shot just before regulation ended.

(Going into overtime, coach told us) “We can do this,” senior LeeAndra Smith. “We work hard, that's why train early in the summer and we have 7 a.m. training sessions, why we do lifting and conditioning, we do it for those moments.”

The Wildcats went to overtime for the second-straight game and began the first overtime period by peppering Cal's keeper with shots. DeGracie had two shots sail high and Doller ripped a shot but it was blocked by the Cal defense.

“There's a lot of things to talk about,” Amato said. “Depending on what's going on in the game, you have to make tactical moves, some motivational part, you have to push players through it. I thought the girls did a good of job it.”

In the second overtime period, neither team really threatened to score. Kaufman made a diving save to her right but she seemed to have it dialed in the whole. Cal had a shot that sailed wide of the target. Glanz was assessed a yellow card for a tackle that ended up stopping a run from the Golden Bears.

Arizona ended the match with 22 shots and six were on target. The Wildcats committed 13 fouls, won three corner kicks and were called offside four times. The Golden Bears registered 16 shots and nine were on target, Kaufman managed to save eight of them. Cal committed 10 fouls, won seven corner kicks and was called offside twice.

“I'm happy with where we are in the season,” Amato said. “Coming into today, we're a top-25 RPI team and if you had said that at the beginning of the year, we all would've said 'yes, please.' We haven't set many goals; it's just about working hard each day and trying to win the next game. The team has done that whether we are home or away.”

The Wildcats will return to action in Salt Lake City on Friday, Oct. 31 against Utah at 11 a.m. MST.
