TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 16 Arizona softball downed Washington State on Friday night (25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17) in front of 1,515 fans at McKale Center on Friday night.
“It certainly wasn't our best effort,” said head coach Dave Rubio. “We weren't very clean and it was very sloppy. In game one I think we gave those points we earned away. We played well enough to win each particular game, but we need a better effort.”
Madi Kingdon led the Cats with 18 kills on 61 swings while Ashley Harris added 11 kills on a .250 hitting percentage.
Five Wildcats recorded double-digit digs for the Cats, who notched 75 digs as a team. Ronni Lewis set a career-high with 26 digs to lead the team. Penina Snuka had 15 digs while Kingdon's 12 gave her a double-double. Kennedy Wesley and Laura Larson had 10 digs each.
"Our defense was amazing,” said Harris. “We dug well, we served well and we passed perfectly. There were no complaints from the back row. I think that also set us up for great offense."
The Wildcats (16-3, 5-2 Pac-12) struggled on offense, hitting just .155, the second worst mark of the season. However, UA was able to hold the Cougars (9-10, 0-7 Pac-12) to just an .089 hitting percentage.
In the first set, Arizona battled back from an early deficit to win the game 25-19. Washington State hit -.024 on offense in the Arizona victory.
After cruising to a second-set victory, Arizona was on the verge of closing out the match, up 22-20 in the third and up again 23-22, before the Cougars came back to win 25-23.
In the fourth, Arizona hit a match-best .250 and received six kills from Kingdon as UA closed out the match with a 25-17 victory.
The Cats take on No. 3 Washington on Sunday at 3 p.m. in McKale Center.
