TUCSON, Ariz. - The 48th-ranked Arizona men's tennis team defeated Utah Tuesday, by a score of 6-1. Once again, the Wildcats won the doubles point and used that momentum to clinch five of six singles matches. With the victory, Arizona improves to 5-1 on the season.
Playing in his first dual match as a Wildcat, freshman Tim Mullane teamed with fellow freshman Daniel Andrus and defeated Utah's Daniel Lohff and Kaison Chaichana, 8-6, at the No. 3 position. Arizona's duo of sophomore Colin O'Grady and freshman Roger Matalonga improved its win streak to five, beating Tyler Poulson and Tomasz Gryzyb, 8-6. The victory clinched the doubles point for the Wildcats. Playing No. 1 doubles for Arizona were sophomore Paul Warkentin and junior Carl Hagman, who fell to Roeland Brateanu and Nick Coutts, 8-4.
Warkentin defeated Tyler Poulson, 6-2, 6-1, playing No. 2 singles for Arizona. Playing No. 1 singles for Arizona, Hagman defeated ex-Wildcat Roeland Brateanu, 6-3, 6-2. Once again clinching the match for Arizona was O'Grady who defeated Daniel Lohff, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at the No. 3 position. Matalonga improved his record to 6-0 with his victory over Tomasz Gryzyb in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Mullane, a freshman from Westlake Village, Calif., fell to Utah's Kaison Chaichana at the No. 6 spot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, earning Utah's lone point. Finishing the match was Andrus, who defeated Nick Coutts at the No. 4 slot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Wildcats will be on the courts next when they travel to Los Angeles to face No. 14 USC on Friday, Feb. 14, at 1:30 p.m.
